Newaygo High School
After giving up an early touchdown, the Lions rebounded to beat Grant 20-6 on Friday night to take home the Battle of M37 Trophy and earn a trip to the playoffs!
Cooper Heinzman scored three times for the Lions as the Senior’s running game was tough to stop on Friday. The offensive line, Wyatt Phillips, Nick Simington, Mike Lafontsee, Corey Crotser, and Dylan Moore provided running room for Heinzman, Zachary Rodriguez, and Connor Swinehart the entire night.
While the offense played well Friday night, defensively is where the Lions really shined. The defensive line of Mike Lafontsee, Dylan Moore, and Braden Benjamin, were tough to stop on Friday night. Noah Graff, Cooper Heinzman and Andrew Goodin were not far behind the line and the group put pressure on the Grant offense the entire night.
“Our defense did a great job on Friday night. They have really bought into our system, and everyone was doing their job Friday night. I am really proud of these guys and the fight that our defense showed,” – Coach Van Essen.
Anthony Hudson sealed the deal for the lions when he had an interception late in the the fourth quarter giving Newaygo the chance to run down the clock.
“The offensive line did a great job giving our running game holes and opportunities. They really worked hard tonight and it showed. Defensively, we made big stops, and didn’t give up the big play which is what we were shooting for. I am excited for these guys to compete in week 10, as they have put in the work and time and earned a playoff spot, but we first have to focus on Manistee Friday night,” Coach Van Essen
