The 2018 Fall Season proved to be a good one for the Lions with a conference championship, state qualifier, and playoff win.
The Boys Soccer team highlighted the fall with their first ever Conference Championship. The Lions only had 4 losses on the season and one of those a loss to very tough Orchard View team in Districts. Angel Guevara and Francisco Rios earned their third 1st team all-conference honors with Noah Painter, Jasper Sanderson, and Adrian Briones also earning 1st team all-conference honors. Jonothan Soto was named to the honorable mention team. “This year’s accomplishments were a total team effort. Everyone on our team worked hard day in and day out, and it showed as we brought home or first ever Conference Championship,” Coach Long.
The Football Team finished second in the conference and picked up their first playoff win under Coach Van Essen ending. In the District final, the Lions fell to a very tough Montague team ending their season with an overall record of 7-4. The all conference team was lead by Seniors, Connor Swinehart, Zach Rodriguez, Michael LaFontsee, Noah Graff, and Andrew Goodin along with Juniors, Carlos Magana and Braden Benjamin. Khade Bhuyan was named to the Honorable Mention team. “The guys worked really hard this off season, and it showed during the season. This was a great group of guys, and the senior class will be missed. I am looking forward to the continued growth of the football program and seeing what the future holds fr these guys,” Coach Van Essen
Ryan Brummel finished his senior season with his second trip to Michigan International Speedway for the State Cross Country meet. Brummel was named to the CSAA honorable mention all-conference team, Academic All State, and had a personal record of 16:49 which is the 4th fastest time for Newaygo High School. Junior, Sophia Frisbie was also named to the honorable mention all-conference team with a personal record of 19:57, 7th fastest at Newaygo High School. “This past season for the cross country teams was exciting and successful. Each individual worked tirelessly to improve his or her times. I couldn’t be more proud of the seniors, who led with grace and class from start to finish. The underclassmen learned a lot from the seniors and will use that knowledge in years to come to continue the tradition of Newaygo Cross Country,” Coach Mercer
Senior, Mya Berwald earned her first CSAA 1st team all-Conference award for volleyball and Sophomore Lillian Ruehmeir earned a spot on the honorable mention team. The volleyball team had a season of growth as the program graduated 9 seniors last year. In the district opener, the Lions earned a win over Comstock Park and then had to face eventual district winner, Coopersville. The 2018 team had three players named to the Academic All-State team, Sage Beerman, Lexi Hall, and Daniella duChemin as well as earned Team Academic All-State. “This was a great group of girls. As a coach it was exciting to see the growth from day one and see the bright future these girls have ahead on the court and in the classroom. The senior class will be missed as they brought a great deal of leadership and enthusiasm for our younger players,” Coach Melvin.
