Lions News · Weekend Recap: District Champs and All-State Pole Vaulter

Over the weekend, the Lions competed in Baseball & Softball Districts, and two Lions competed at the State Track Meet.

TRACK-All State Honors

Tylor Bergers and David Gonzalez along with Coach Scott Youmans travelled to Comstock park on Saturday for the MHSAA State Track meet. Sophomore, Gonzalez competed in the Long Jump just missing the finals with a jump of 19’6″ putting him in 20th place, while Bergers Track Meet vaulted 12’6″ for a 6th place finish, and All-State honors. “David Gonzalez and Tylor Bergers performed extremely well this past saturday at the MHSAA state track meet in Comstock Park.  They represented themselves and our school in such an incredible manner.  I was proud and honored to have coached these two fine young men,” Coach Youmans.

The Baseball & Softball teams travelled to Morley Stanwood to compete in the MHSAA District tournament where the Baseball team claimed their second straight district title with a 14-2 win over Lakeview in the finals. Both Baseball & Softball opened the day with Central Montcalm in which the Baseball team claimed a 5-1 win and the Softball Team fell short, 10-1 to the eventual District Champions.

BASEBALL-District Champs

Jarrod Heideman and Connor Swinehart led the way for the Lions from the mound on Saturday and the Lions offense provided plenty of firepower to earn their second District title. In game one for the day, Heideman had 12 K’s and the Lions rallied for 4 runs in the 6th inning to earn the victory. In the District Finals, The lions put up 10 runs in the 5th inning to claim the title. Cooper Heinzman, Noah Graff, Nick Simington, and Andrew Goodin all had three hits against Lakeview, and Brandon Sekach added two. “We had a great week of practice and the guys were all business today. We got producBaseball teamtion from the bottom of our lineup and they were a key part of our success today. We set goals at the beginning of the year, and they are working hard to attain them. These guys have been fun to coach all year,” Coach Bomay.

The Lions will travel to Kent City on June 9th for the regional matchup in which they will take on Northpointe Christian at noon on Saturday.
