2017 Football Season Preview
The Varsity Football team is looking to make their way back to the top of the CSAA this year under the direction of new Head Football Coach Scott Van Essen. Coach Van Essen may be new to Newaygo, but he is most definitely not new to the game of Football. Coach Van Essen comes to Newaygo with 28 years of prior experience and has hit the ground running.
This season, the Lions will look to a core group of returners to step up and make big plays as well as a group of underclassmen who are anxious to make their varsity debuts.
Defensively the Lions will be led by Seniors Cooper Heinzman, Nick Simington, and Dalton Jones joined by Juniors Noah Graff and Andrew Goodin.
On the offensive attack, Junior Connor Swinehart will lead the way from the Quarterback position joined by sophomore running backs Zachary Rodriguez and David Gonzalez. Protecting Connor, and leading the way for the backfield will be Mike Lafontsee, Wyatt Phillips, Corey Crotser, Simington, and Goodin. Anthony Hudson and Branden Verburg will look to make an impact offensively with the passing game.
“The guys have been working extremely hard this offseason, and we are looking forward to our matchup Thursday against Hopkins. Our motto this year is to work hard, and take it one game at a time, and our guys have really bought into that process.” –Coach Van Essen
The lions open up their season on Friday night with a JV/Varsity double header at Hopkins High School. JV will start at 4:00pm with the Varsity game following at 7:00pm.
