Boys Junior Varsity Baseball, Boys Varsity Baseball · 2017 Baseball Season Preview

Newaygo Lions 2017 Varsity Baseball

The 2017 Lions varsity baseball teams looks to make some big noise in the league this year.   The Lions are returning 5 juniors and seniors from last year’s team that all had significant playing time.  The Lions worked extremely hard in the offseason in batting cage with Lions new head coach Jerry Bomay.  “These guys have been a joy to work with this offseason.  I actually had to tell them more than once to take some time off.  They are hard workers”

Senior, Hunter Lay will be relied on heavily for his bat.   Dylan Burkholder is another senior who will be expected to shoulder a big load on the mound.  Senior Gabe Orsi is new to the program but his athleticism will help us tremendously on the bases.

Juniors, Jared Heideman, Cooper Heinzman, Nick Simingoton all were starters last year on the varsity team and are going to be relied upon heavily.  Heideman, will be one of our top pitchers with experience from last year.   Simington will be our main catcher.  Simington is built how you want a catcher built.  Simington is strong physically along with a very powerful bat and a skill set and leadership behind the plate that should have pitchers feeling comfortable when out on the mound.   Cooper Heinzman our centerfielder has tremendous range and speed to burn.   His skills in the outfield along with his ability to bunt will most definitely help us.  Brandon Verberg is another big bat in our lineup that will get lots of time in the lineup at first base along with the outfield

The Lions are going to have the services as well from four sophomores.  Conner Swinhart, Noah Graff, Orion Gordon and Andrew Goodin, even though they are young all four of these guys will be seeing lots of playing time both as position players and pitchers.
